[Mystras](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mystras/) in southern [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) was the provincial capital of the [Byzantine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Byzantine/) [Despotate of the Morea](https://www.worldhistory.org/Despotate_of_the_Morea/) from the 13th through the 15th centuries CE. It was primarily known for its churches, which, with the exception of the occasional added belfry, were built in the Byzantine style of overlapping bricks with lines of red brick adding a telltale accent, replete with barreled ceilings and beautiful frescoes.
