The [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) of [Hephaistos](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hephaistos/) and [Athena](https://www.worldhistory.org/athena/), also known as the Theseum because of its decorative [sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Sculpture/) depicting the feats of [Theseus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Theseus/), [Athens](https://www.worldhistory.org/Athens/). The Doric temple, built in 449 BCE, is situated in the [agora](https://www.worldhistory.org/agora/). Hephaistos and Athena, as gods of [crafts](https://www.worldhistory.org/crafts/) were worshipped here and within were [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) statues of the divinities.
