Situated in North [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) at the border of East Macedonia and Thrace, ancient [Philippi](https://www.worldhistory.org/Philippi/) stood about 16 km N-NW of the port [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) Neapolis (modern Kavalla) and originally bore the name Krenides (from the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) for “spring”) in recognition of the abundance of streams in the area.
