## Image Caption

A marble sacrificial altar dedicated to the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) gods [Mars](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mars/) and [Venus](https://www.worldhistory.org/venus/), c. 124 CE. Later used as a pedestal for a statue of the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Silvanus. The carvings tell of the founding of [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) with the figures of [Romulus and Remus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Romulus_and_Remus/), their adoptive shepherd father Faustulus and a personification of the river Tiber.
