Founded in 1132 CE, the Cistercian abbey was closed in 1539 CE as part of the [Dissolution of the Monasteries](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries/) during the reign of [Henry VIII of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Henry_VIII_of_England/) (r. 1509-1547 CE).
