Western view of Bamburgh Castle. Bamburgh was originally built as a fort in the 5th Century CE and a castle was built on the site by the Normans at the turn of the 11th Century CE. The castle was besieged twice by forces loyal to [Edward IV of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edward_IV_of_England/) (r. 1461 to 1470 CE, 1471 - 1483 CE) during the [Wars of the Roses](https://www.worldhistory.org/Wars_of_the_Roses/) (1455 - 1487 CE).
