## Image Caption

"Plucking the Red & White Roses in the Old [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) Gardens" by Henry Payne (1868 - 1940 CE). The painting depicts Richard of York challenging Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset to choose between the White Rose of House York and the Red Rose of House Lancaster, in the build up to the [Wars of the Roses](https://www.worldhistory.org/Wars_of_the_Roses/). The fictional scene was portrayed in Shakespeare's *Henry VI* (c. 1591 CE) [Fresco](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Fresco/). Made 1908 CE. The original painting is in [Palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/) of Westminster, while a later version is in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
