The [Wars of the Roses](https://www.worldhistory.org/Wars_of_the_Roses/) (1455–1487) were a series of intermittent civil wars for the English crown between the houses of Lancaster and York, rival branches of the Plantagenet dynasty descended from Edward III. The conflict emerged from competing hereditary claims, weak royal authority under Henry VI, and powerful noble factions struggling for political influence. Closely related through generations of royal marriages, the rival families turned disputes over succession and legitimacy into decades of [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/).

The struggle brought shifting alliances, battles, and repeated changes of monarch, culminating in Henry Tudor's victory over [Richard III](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Richard_III/) at the [Battle of Bosworth](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_Bosworth/) in 1485. As Henry VII, he founded the Tudor dynasty and married Elizabeth of York in 1486, symbolically uniting the rival houses. The defeat of Yorkist resistance at the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Stoke Field in 1487 marked the conventional end of the wars, paving the way for greater political stability and the consolidation of Tudor royal authority.
