The ancient [theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/) of [Herculaneum](https://www.worldhistory.org/Herculaneum/) was first discovered in 1709 by a farmer who was digging a well and was later excavated by tunnelling down through the volcanic rock. The theatre was built of stone in the Augustan period (27 BCE – 14 CE) and could hold about 2500 spectators. It was decorated with many types of marble, large [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) statues and equestrian statues which are now at the Naples Archaeological Museum.
