The Terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus lies in the suburban dIstrict of [Herculaneum](https://www.worldhistory.org/Herculaneum/), near the ancient waterfront. Dominating the terrace are a statue of M. Nonius Balbus, together with a memorial altar set up in his honour. Balbus was a native of Nuceria. He became [praetor](https://www.worldhistory.org/praetor/) and proconsul of the provinces of [Crete](https://www.worldhistory.org/crete/) and [Cyrene](https://www.worldhistory.org/cyrene/).
