## Image Caption

The original wooden doors of [Chepstow Castle](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chepstow_Castle/) in southern Wales. The castle was first built c. 1067 CE by Earl William FitzOsbern and then extended from c. 1190 CE by [Sir William Marshal](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sir_William_Marshal/) (c. 1146-1219 CE). The doors, dated using tree-ring analysis to the 1190s CE, were an innovation of Sir William’s. They are the oldest castles doors in [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) and were covered in iron plates to make them impregnable to battering and fire.
