# Sculptures at Konarak Sun Temple

These sculptures are found in the [Konarak Sun Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/Konarak_Sun_Temple/), Odisha state, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). Carved in the [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/), these show [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) in various poses, as singers and playing musical instruments. Latticework and niches can be seen. Many of these figures can be seen on the walls and pillars of the bhoga mandapa (refectory hall), which precisely because of this, has also come to be known as the nata mandapa (dancing hall). The details are intricately carved and show excellent workmanship. The Konarak Sun Temple was built in the 13th century CE (around 1250 CE) by King Narasimhadeva I (1238 – 1264 CE) of the Eastern [Ganga](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ganges/) dynasty (8th century CE - 15th century CE).
