A panoramic view of Fontevraud Abbey near Chinon, France. The abbey was founded in 1101 CE by Robert of Arbrissel (c. 1045 – 1116 CE). The abbey was the [burial](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) place of several English monarchs, including King [Henry II of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Henry_II_of_England/) (r. 1154 - 1189 CE), his wife Eleanor of Aquitane (r. 1137 - 1204 CE), their son King [Richard I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Richard_I_of_England/) (r. 1189 - 1199 CE), and and Isabella of Angoulême (1165 - 1199 CE). Joan of [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/), queen-consort of [Sicily](https://www.worldhistory.org/sicily/) from 1177 -1189 CE and countess of Touluse from 1196 until her [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) in 1199 CE, and her son Raymond VII of Toulouse (r. 1222 - 1249 CE) were also buried in Fontevraud Abbey.
