The Masada (“fortress” in Hebrew) is a mountain complex in [Israel](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Israel/) in the Judean desert that overlooks the Dead Sea. It was first constructed in the 1st century BCE and renovated by [Herod the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Herod_the_Great/) (37-4 BCE).
