## Image Caption

This high-quality head of a statue is based on a [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) figure of a discophoros ("disc-thrower"). The original bronze was created around 460 BCE by the famous [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) sculptor Polykleitos of [Argos](https://www.worldhistory.org/argos/). The Berlin copy clearly imitates the metallic precision of the bronze cast. The wings on the figures of head, similar to those of [Hermes](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hermes/), were added by the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) copyist. Marble. Roman copy around 140 CE. Acquired on the art market in 1930 CE. It is on display at the Altes Museum in Berlin, Germany.
