The Large [Theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/) of [Pompeii](https://www.worldhistory.org/pompeii/) was built in the 2nd century BCE in the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) type and carved into the natural slope of the hill. During the reign of [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/), the theatre was significantly restored and enlarged according to the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) style. Further restorations were undertaken after the [earthquake](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/earthquake/) of 62 CE. The Large Theatre of Pompeii could accommodate 5,000 people.
