## Image Caption

The [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) of [Isis](https://www.worldhistory.org/isis/) in [Pompeii](https://www.worldhistory.org/pompeii/) dates from the 2nd century BCE and was dedicated to the [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) goddess Isis whose cult was widespread throughout the [Roman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Empire/). It was totally rebuilt after the [earthquake](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/earthquake/) of 62 CE at the expense of the freedman Numerius Popidius Ampliatus in the name of his six-year-old son Celsinus. The temple, situated in the centre of a porticoed courtyard, stands on a raised podium reached by a staircase at the front.
