## Image Caption

Mosque of the Dome of the Rock (Qubbat al-Sakhra) located on the [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) Mount in [Jerusalem](https://www.worldhistory.org/jerusalem/). It was erected by the Muslim caliph Abd el-Malik in 688-691 CE but [Suleiman the Magnificent](https://www.worldhistory.org/Suleiman_the_Magnificent/) (1520-1566 CE) was responsible for the mosque’s renovation and the replacement of exterior mosaics with shimmering tiles. This photo was taken in 2008 CE.
