View of the four-colonnaded atrium of the Villa San Marco in Stabiae, [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/) (1st century BCE). The tetrastyle atrium was entered through a small colonnaded and frescoed portico furnished with masonry seats for waiting visitors. Looking across the impluvium, the square basin in the centre of the atrium, is the household lararium adorned with frescoes imitating precious marbles. The atrium is surrounded by cubicula (private rooms).
