## Image Caption

A 3rd Century CE bas-relief in Taq-e Bostan, Iran commemorating the overthrow of the [Parthian Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Parthia_(Empire)/) by [Ardashir I](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ardashir_I/) (180-240 CE, r. 224-240 CE), the founder of the [Sasanian Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sasanian_Empire/). Ardashir I is depicted with his son [Shapur I](https://www.worldhistory.org/Shapur_I/), (215-270 CE, r. 240-270 CE) as they symbolically trample their defeated enemy, Artabanus IV (r. 213-224 CE).
