This image shows the Bateshwar group of [Hindu](https://www.worldhistory.org/hinduism/) temples built during the 8th and 10th centuries CE by the [Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gurjara-Pratihara_Empire/) (8th century CE - 11th century CE) of northern [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). In total there are about 200 temples spread over an area of 25 acres, built across the sloping hills near the village of Padavli in Morena district, Madhya Pradesh state. Most of the temples are dedicated to the Hindu gods [Shiva](https://www.worldhistory.org/shiva/) and [Vishnu](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vishnu/). Built in the Nagara or north-Indian style of [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/), they are fine specimens of the architecture, carving, and sculptural styles that flourished in the period.
