This map shows the territorial extent of the Rashtrakuta (8th century CE - 10th century CE), Gurjara-Pratihara or Pratihara (8th century CE - 11th century CE) and Pala (8th century CE - 12th century CE) empires. These three empires flourished in the late ancient period in [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/) (8th century CE onwards) and engaged in constant [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) with each other over the control of the strategically and economically important Kanyakubja (Kannauj) Kingdom. The overlapping areas in the map show conquests which changed with time, depending on which [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) was strong enough, either to [conquer](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) enemy territory or to retake its lost areas.
