The 'Clarke [Plato](https://www.worldhistory.org/plato/)', the oldest manuscript (discounting papyrus fragments) for about half the dialogues of Plato, was written by John the Calligrapher in 895 CE for Arethas the deacon, originally a native of Patras, who later became archbishop of [Caesarea](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Caesarea/) in Cappadocia. Bodleian Library, MS. E. D. Clarke 39, first page recto.
