Sumerian Votive Plaque from Khafajah Download Full Size Image

This limestone plaque was excavated by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in the early 1930s, 1st season. It depicts three scenes in three registers. The upper register shows a banquet scene with musicians. The middle register shows men bringing jars. The lower register shows four horses (the chariot is now lost). There is a square hole at the middle for wall fixation. Early Dynastic period, c. 2600 BCE. From Khafajah (ancient Tutub), Iraq. On display at the Iraq Museum in Baghdad, Republic of Iraq.
