## Image Caption

Headless, 2.5-metre tall (8.2 feet) granite statue of [Darius I](https://www.worldhistory.org/Darius_I/) (r. 522-486 BCE) originally made to be set up in [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) and found in 1972 in [Susa](https://www.worldhistory.org/susa/) on the west side of the Gate of [Darius](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/darius/). [Darius the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Darius_I/) is dressed in the Persian robe but in an [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) posture. The statue has inscriptions in the three [cuneiform](https://www.worldhistory.org/cuneiform/) languages of the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) (Old Persian, [Elamite](https://www.worldhistory.org/elam/) and [Akkadian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/akkadian/)) and in [hieroglyphics](https://www.worldhistory.org/Egyptian_Hieroglyphs/). One of the inscriptions on the dress says, “Here is the stone statue which Darius ordered to be made in Egypt so that he who sees it in the future will know that the Persian holds Egypt." (c. 522-486 BCE). National Museum of Iran, Tehran.
