A photograph of the ruins of the 7th Century CE Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/). The abbey was founded by King Oswy of Northumbria (642-670 CE) in 657 CE, and was placed under the guidance of its first abbess, St. [Hilda of Whitby](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hilda_of_Whitby/) (614 - 680 CE). The abbey fell into disuse after the [Dissolution of the Monasteries](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries/) (1536 - 1545 CE) by Henry VIII (r. 1509 - 1547 CE).
