Nicopolis was founded in 29 BCE by [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) (r. 27 BCE - 14 CE), and is notable for being the home of the philosopher [Epictetus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Epictetus/) (c. 50 CE - c. 130 CE) after his exile by [Domitian](https://www.worldhistory.org/domitian/) (r. 81 - 96 CE).
