Kukawa was founded by [Muhammad](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Muhammad/) al-Amin al-Kanemi (1776 - 1837 CE) who supplanted the Saifawa (aka Sefawa) Dynasty which had ruled the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) of [Kanem](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kingdom_of_Kanem/)-Borno since roughly 1075 CE. Kukawa eventually became the capital of Borno.
