## Image Caption

The skeletal remains of a [Neanderthal](https://www.worldhistory.org/Neanderthal/) corpse, which was found inside the [Paleolithic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paleolithic/) cave of Shanidar, Erbil Governorate, Iraqi Kurdistan. If you zoom in the image on the right clavicular bone, someone wrote, using a blue pen, "Shanidar I". So, this is Shanidar 1, a 40 to 50-year-old Neanderthal male, known as "Nandy" to his excavators. He is old for a Neanderthal, equivalent to an 80-year-old man today. His left eye was partially or entirely blind because of a crushing trauma to the left eye socket. His skeleton has revealed many signs of trauma and healing. His skeleton was almost complete when he was found. He died 60,000 to 45,000 years BCE. Ten skeletons were found in Shanidar Cave by American archaeologist Ralph Solecki; eight [Neanderthals](https://www.worldhistory.org/Neanderthal/) and two pre-Neanderthals. This skeleton is on display in case number one, the Pre-History Gallery, Iraq Museum, Baghdad, Iraq.
