The Sanctuary of [Apollo](https://www.worldhistory.org/apollo/) Hylates lies two miles west of Kourion near Limassol in [Cyprus](https://www.worldhistory.org/cyprus/). Here Apollo was worshipped as the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of the woodlands. This large sacred complex, one of the most important religious centres on the island of Cyprus, was established in the 8th century BC and was used continuously until the 4th century CE.
