This [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) issued by Emperor [Samudragupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/Samudragupta/) (335/350 – 370/380 CE) of the [Gupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/gupta/) dynasty shows him wearing a [Scythian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Scythians/)-style coat, trousers and cap and Indian-style necklace and earrings. He has a halo around his head. The standard shown in the coin has a [garuda](https://www.worldhistory.org/Garuda/) (an Indian mythical bird) on top, the symbol of the [Gupta empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gupta_Empire/). Below the emperor’s arm is his name written vertically: Samudra. The obverse side has the legend Samara-shata-vitata-vijayo jita-aripuranto-divam-jayati or "The conqueror of the unconquered fortresses of his enemies, whose victory was spread in hundreds of battles, conquers heaven". This was the earliest kind of coin issued by the Gupta dynasty. It can be now seen at the British Museum, London.
