This [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) issued by Emperor [Samudragupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/Samudragupta/) (335/350 – 370/380 CE) of the [Gupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/gupta/) dynasty shows him playing the vina, an Indian stringed instrument resembling the [lyre](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lyre/) or lute. The legend on the coin says "Maharajadhiraja-Shri-Samudraguptah”.
