This map shows the conquests made by [Gupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/gupta/) rulers in the 4th century CE and early 5th century CE. Of these three rulers—Chandragupta I, [Samudragupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/Samudragupta/) and [Chandragupta II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chandragupta_II/)—Samudragupta’s conquests are the most important and the most extensive, to the degree that Samudragupta came to be known as the “Indian [Napoleon](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Napoleon/)”. His conquests formed the base for the further extension of the [Gupta empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gupta_Empire/) and the determination of its final extent.
