This [column](https://www.worldhistory.org/column/) was shaped in the Classical Ionic Order; a characteristic capital with volutes. The detailed carving of this capital was not finished off. This may be due, in part, to the difficulty of carving accurate details in the local rough basalt of northern [Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/). Another factor could have been the need to quickly produce large numbers of columns, for example for the main street in Gadara (which was later renovated in the Corinthian order).
