Black-glazed [pottery](https://www.worldhistory.org/pottery/) from [Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/). Although known by this term, the pottery is not technically glazed. It evolved from the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) Attic "Red-on-Black" pottery, but the images of heroes and gods that made the Attic vases famous were replaced by vegetal and simple geometric motifs by the end of the 4th century BCE. The centers for the production of the black pottery spread across the northern [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) areas during the [Hellenistic period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenistic_Period/), where there were raw materials for producing the metallic slip. Only a few pots were found in Jordan, as it was a luxury import reserved for the elite.
