## Image Caption

The sculptor's signature, written in [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/), can be seen on the base (left) of this marble statue. The text reads "Antoninus Alexandreus, son of [Antiochos](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/antiochos/), made this \[statue\] by himself". The statue may be of [Apollo](https://www.worldhistory.org/apollo/) or a [muse](https://www.worldhistory.org/muse/). The name Antoninus Alexandreus appears in another inscription found in [Jerash](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jerash/) which can be dated back to the last two decades of the 2nd century CE. The Greek name Alexandreus and his father Antiochos, as well as the technique of the statue, might indicate that he was a Greek citizen who lived in the Province of [Arabia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Arabia/). His father, or one of his ancestors, had been a freedman of a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) named Antoninus because freedmen assumed the family name of their former masters. Maybe he was a freedman of the [Roman Emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/) [Marcus Aurelius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marcus_Aurelius/) or [Commodus](https://www.worldhistory.org/commodus/) himself. Roman period, 75-100 CE. From Jerash (Gerasa), [Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/). (The Jordan Museum, Amman, Jordan).
