Hayk Khachatrian was born in Armenia in 1926. In 1950, he graduated from Yerevan State University’s Philological Department of Armenian Language and Literature.

Khachatrian began his career in education in Armenia. In 1955 Khachatrian became a journalist,

working as editor-in-chief of the Armenpress news agency, then worked as the assistant editor for the Hayreniki Dzayn weekly newspaper.

From 1976 to his death, Khachatrian worked as an assistant editor of the Armenian Encyclopedia and wrote several historical novels, including Tigranes the Great (1967), Erebuni (1968), Artavasdes (1975), The Queens of Armenia (1991), and many others, some of which later became best-sellers.

The Armenian edition of Tigranes the Great was well received, with estimates ranging from four hundred thousand to over six hundred thousand.

Khachatrian’s works have been translated into English, Russian, Bulgarian, and other languages.

He mainly dedicated his works to the freedom of Armenian people and their struggle to form their identity linking modern Armenians to their ancestors’ experiences. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 75.
