Single dad Mitchell Fisher has said a firm goodbye to romance. He relishes his job cutting off the padlocks that couples fasten to his hometown’s famous ‘love story’ bridge. Only his young daughter Poppy knows that behind his prickly veneer, Mitchell is deeply lonely – and he still grieves the loss of her mother.

Then one hot summer’s day, everything changes when Mitchell bravely rescues a woman who falls from the bridge into the river. He’s surprised to feel an unexpected connection to her, but then she disappears. Desperate to find the mysterious woman, Mitchell teams up with her spirited sister Liza to see if she’s left any clues behind. There’s just one – a secret message on the padlock she left on love story bridge…

Brimming with Phaedra Patrick’s signature charm and a sparkling cast of characters,
The Secrets of Sunshine follows one man’s journey to unlock his heart and discover new beginnings in the unlikeliest places.

Hello and welcome to my author page! If you click the yellow 'Follow' button, Amazon will send you an email when I have a new release, or if there's a special deal you might be interested in.

I’ve always wanted to write books but came to it the long way around. I originally studied art and marketing and then worked as a stained glass artist, film festival organiser and communications manager. I won several awards for my short stories and have now written six novels, four of which became USA Today bestsellers. I live with my family in Saddleworth, UK, where I write full time.

My debut novel, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, was translated into twenty five languages worldwide and was optioned by a major Hollywood film studio.

My second novel, Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone (named Wishes Under the Willow Tree in the UK), was made into a Hallmark movie in 2021.

My third novel, inspired by my love of stories, is The Library of Lost and Found. It was selected as ’The Great North West Read,’ to be read across 300 libraries in the UK in 2019.

My fourth is titled The Secrets of Love Story Bridge (The Secrets of Sunshine in the UK) and my fifth, The Messy Lives of Book People (titled The Book Share in the UK) was the Barnes & Noble fiction pick for June 2022 in the USA.

I hope you enjoy my sixth novel, The Little Italian Hotel, a warm, uplifting escape about the power of love, friendship and following your dreams.

I’ve read all her books. They’re great. They’re clever. She has a fresh new voice. Highly recommend!

I got this book because I enjoy Phaedra Patrick's work so much, and thought this was a new one - but it's really the exact same book titled "The Secrets of Love Story Bridge"! So I was disappointed by that, even though it's a fine book overall.

The Secrets of Sunshine by Phaedra Patrick is a nice, gentle and heartwarming story.
Mitchell is a widower and single parent to Poppy. He is still grieving the sudden and tragic loss of his wife Anita in a car accident a few years ago. Previously an engineer, designing and working on bridges, he now removes the padlocks from them; love tokens left by others. Mitchell is full of regrets, bitterness and a certain amount of anger over the path his life has taken.
One day however, following a freak accident in which a young woman falls from a bridge into the river below, Mitchell unexpectedly becomes something of a local hero when he jumps into the water and saves her. Amidst local press interest, Mitchell meets Liza, a young teacher grieving losses of her own.
The Secrets of Sunshine was not a taxing read, either cognitively or emotionally, but it did leave me with a warm feeling of certainty that love conquers all, and that Mitchell had finally found his happy ever after.
I give this book 3 stars.

I waited weeks to get a paperback copy of this. I’ve liked all of Patrick’s books; but this one is trite and hard to believe or even imagine plausible the reality of all the nonsensical little plots she contrived. I’m very disappointed.

I am returning this paperback book. Changing the title doesn't create a new book but it does confuse people.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cried, I laughed and I loved it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2022
I had never read a 'feel-good' book, I picked up The Book Share earlier this year and was completely enchanted by Phaedra Patrick's 'curiously charming fiction'.

The Secrets Of Sunshine was the last of Phaedra's five currently published books left for me to read. While I'm sad to have finished them all, this was a great read, one of my favourite.

Mitchell enjoyed his life, working as an architect and happily married. Then his wife died, leaving him as a single dad to nine-year-old Poppy, and forced to move and adapt and take a council maintenance job. Mitchell is quite straight laced, and lives in the shadow of the memories of his love and hopes and dreams.

A selfless heroic act saves a woman's life. After the incident the woman can't be traced, pushing Mitchell out of his comfort zone and into an adventure to try and reunite the mysterious lady with her family.

Phaedra's writing is captivating, charming and poignant. Her characters face all kinds of personal challenges and really grow and blossom through the experience.

Just gorgeous, I was reading through the tears, laughing and crying, racing through this book with my heart well and truly warmed.

Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully entertaining story - witty, moving and intriguing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2020
I really enjoyed reading this book and I have recommended it to friends and family. I had a lovely weekend dipping in and out and was glad to get back to it whenever I could. The twisty plot reminded me of an intriguing Father Brown type mystery. It was very satisfying the way all the various strands interconnected and were resolved by the end. I could definitely see it as a televised drama. The link to the padlocks that lovers secure onto the sides of bridges is very original. The characters are a bit quirky, very likeable and relatable too. It has that lovely mix of humour and pathos that Phaedra Patrick does so well. The heartbreak and grief of the lead character, Mitchell, is captured in a very moving and tender way. And I’m still chuckling about the many comedic moments such as the speed dating on ice, the campfire jamboree and vegan wedding, to name but a few. Above all I loved Mitchell’s extraordinary journey of discovery and his friendships along the way.

3.0 out of 5 stars An easy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2023
Having read all the reviews I opted to go with this book. I found it a little disappointing however. The title had nothing to do with the story, which was a bit of an anti-climax.
After reading some 'heavier' books this was a nice easy read, a little light entertainment.
