Chersonesus was a Greek colony established in the 5th century BCE by Dorians from Heraclea Pontica on the northern shores of the Black Sea in what is now the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula (modern-day Sevastopol in Ukraine). Chersonesus evolved into a thriving city-state known for its strategic location and economic significance. Over the centuries, the city experienced periods of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine rule, each leaving a distinct imprint on its culture and architecture.
