Praise for Moon Mask (2011) – Amazon reader reviews

Episode 1:
The Xibalba Prophecy

The world watched as scientists descended on the Sarisariñama Labyrinth, promising a discovery to rival the opening of King Tut’s tomb. It was touted as a ‘real-life Indiana Jones adventure,’ a chance to explore the mysterious ruins found inside of one of Venezuela’s table mountains. Commercial funders poured millions into the project. UNESCO proclaimed it an addition to the seven ancient wonders of the world.

Six months later, the Sarisariñama Expedition is a bust.

But, just as the team prepares to leave the failed expedition, disgraced archaeologist Benjamin King makes a startling discovery. Sealed for millennia within the mountain’s dark heart lies a macabre temple of skulls and a deadly relic he has hunted for years.

Could it be linked to the ancient African legend of the Moon Mask? Or, tormented by a past tragedy, is King’s obsession with its fabled power – the ability to glimpse the future – merely his latest slip from reality?

As a series of bizarre animal attacks plunge the expedition into chaos and pits them against a local tribe, King questions his own sanity. But, when news of the discovery reverberates around the world, it soon becomes apparent that there are those who will kill to protect the Moon Mask’s secret . . . and those who will do far worse to control it.

As spies and assassins, tomb raiders and relic hunters prepare to descend on the mountain, King is thrust into a global conspiracy and the beginnings of an ancient prophecy that could spell doom for humankind.

The World of Moon Mask

The Xibalba Prophecy is the first episode in the World of Moon Mask, an exciting, interactive multimedia experience spanning serialised novels, character blogs, social media, and escape-room-style games.

Daring to experiment with traditional storytelling , James Richardson weaves an explosive, action-packed adventure based on the serialised model popular on streaming TV. Filled with optional links to the expanded World of Moon Mask, expect edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting thrill-rides and heart-stopping cliff-hangers galore as each episode builds into a season-wide story arc and a thrilling climax that will change the world forever. . .

Season 1 starts July 22 2022. New episodes released monthly.

“Think of Harrison Ford, Robert Langley, Angelina Joly, Flash Gordon, and all the Boys Own Papers rolled into one, and you get some idea of this rip-roaring tale of adventure.”

“Great for anyone who likes the Clive Cussler or Matthew Reilly genre of adventure books.”

“It brings many current and alternative ideas from archaeology and ethnography and spices it up with some political shenanigans. I loved it!”

“A cracking fast-paced epic thriller in the vein of Matthew Reilly, James Rollins and Andy McDermott, and one of the best debuts of this genre I have read.”
“Made Indiana Jones look like he was on a picnic!”

Filling his books with explosive and action-packed tales of adventure and derring-do, James Richardson draws on years of globe-trotting, archaeological excavation and museum work to build an interconnected universe of novels, character blogs, and social media feeds.

He has recently adapted and amended his bestselling 2011 novel 'Moon Mask' into a serialised saga, modelled on the binge-worthy, multi-episode narrative arcs so dominant on streaming TV.

Rather than considering himself a traditional author, James likes to think of himself as a 'storyteller' and is always on the lookout for new and imaginative ways of telling stories, from Twitter-based 'choose-your-own-adventures' to text-chat tales, interactive maps and even digital escape-room games.

Now working for an award-winning museum, James has a First Degree in archaeology and has excavated and explored ancient ruins from Britain's Roman frontier to Peru's Chimu civilisation and beyond.

Most of his inspiration stems from years of travelling to six out of seven continents, dozens of countries, and encounters with societies from the Americas to Asia, from Europe to Africa and Australaisia. He has been welcomed into the homes of traditional communities in Nubia, Fiji, Bolivia and Guatemala and has been privileged to participate in some of the sacred rituals and ceremonies of these incredible people.

From megalithic temples in Malta to trekking through the steamy jungles of the Amazon; from swimming with sharks in the Pacific, exploring the ruins of South East Asia and travelling across the plains of Africa; to slogging through deserts, dancing the haka with Maori and hiking across glaciers, he's been pretty much wherever Raine and King go (though with fewer explosions, chases, booby-traps and villains!)

He is always eager to connect with fans and welcomes feedback, suggestions or even just a friendly hello.

Within the first pages, the author used the word whelp when he meant “whelt” It wasn’t long before more errors appeared. By the time I read of a body rotting from disease being strong enough to kill two strong men, I was considering abandoning the book. The next cgapter convinced me not to waste my time.

I love this author! A cracking adventure story with characters that leap off the page. As an amateur archaeologist I appreciate the care and detail - as a reader - I just get lost in the frenzy of the story - I had to stay up all night to finish! Cannot wait for the next one - The Xibalba Quest!
