Boudica, or Boadicea, queen of the Iceni, led a famous revolt against Roman rule in Britain in AD 60, sacking London, Colchester and St Albans and throwing the province into chaos. Although then defeated by the governor, Suetonius Paulinus, her rebellion sent a shock wave across the empire. Who was this woman who defied Rome?
Boudica: Iron Age Warrior Queen is an account of what we know about the real woman, from classical literature, written for the consumption of readers in Rome, and from the archaeological evidence. It also traces her extraordinary posthumous career as the earliest famous woman in British history. Since the Renaissance she has been seen as harridan, patriot, freedom fighter and feminist, written about in plays and novels, painted and sculpted, and recruited to many causes. She remains a tragic, yet inspirational, figure of unending interest.

Review

'...This account, by two archaeologists, is a good one, and gives us all that we know for sure about this interesting figure, and all the myths and fantasies which have been built up around her.'

Probably the most informative book I have run across regarding this woman, so little is known about her. What is known seems to be compiled into this book so, for people like myself, I would recommend it.

The author gave all the available information about Boudica and gave us some intelligent quesses about the rest of her story. Even the cover picture of Boudica is the best available image of her. If you want to know Boudica's story, read this book.

Very well written and comprehensive book about Boudica and her exploits. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn more about the subject.

At times this was a little bogged down in explanations that had already been gone over earlier in the book. The images and maps were helpful in understanding the areas the authors were speaking about making a clearer picture for the reader. I liked how they overviewed the modern take on Boudica, how her image has been used throughout times and how she has impacted people throughout history.

A focus on all of the available facts regarding an amazing person in the form of Iceni Celtic Queen Boudica and her revolt in Britain against the power of the Roman Empire.

This was a gift for a difficult to please engineer and fisherman and she wanted this book and was very pleased to receive it for Christmas. This hit the mark.

The only thing this book didn't have was an editor.
I wanted a concise, well written bio of this historic figure. I didn't get that. The author put everything he ever learned about early Britain in this bloated, self-indulgent blather. One has to plow through hundreds of pages (One example: a long history of early coins that could have been covered in a few pages) and other dreary minutiae that add nothing to Boudica's story.
