The book leads the reader through these vibrant stories, from the origins of the gods through to the homecomings of the Trojan heroes. All the familiar narratives are here, along with some less familiar characters and motifs. In addition to the tales, the book explains key issues arising from the narratives, and discusses the myths and their wider relevance. This long-overdue book crystallises three key areas of interest: the nature of the tales; the stories themselves; and how they have and might be interpreted. For the first time, it brings together aspects of Greek mythology only usually available in disparate forms namely children s books and academic works. There will be much here that is interesting, surprising, and strange as well as familiar. Experts and non-experts, adults, students and schoolchildren alike will gain entertainment and insight from this fascinating and important volume. As inhuman fire sweeps on in fury through the deep angles of a drywood mountain and sets ablaze the depth of the timber and the blustering wind lashes the flame along, so Achilleus swept everywhere with his spear like something more than a mortal harrying them as they died, and the black earth ran blood. Homer "Iliad" 20. 490-4 - On the surface the recent Hollywood blockbuster "Troy", directed by Wolfgang Petersen, tries to read the "Iliad" rightly, but makes a number of interesting modifications to the story, presumably in the interests of commercial success & In searching for a contemporary Achilles there are those who look towards the action heroes played by the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean-Claude van Damme. But Rambo does not die young, the Terminator does not weep, and the Universal Soldier does not eat with the father of his victims.

This book was so helpful. I tried for years to teach myself Greek mythology, but decided to take a professional course with Dr. Kershaw. If you are thirsty for knowledge, you’ll love his courses and books. He definitely knows his stuff and was very knowledgeable with Greek myths and tales. I learned more from these books and his courses on Oxford online than I could have ever dreamed of. The audiobook is a great addition as well. Great for when you’re driving in the car. With the knowledge I gained from his book, I was able to construct an entire flow chart style Greek god genealogy chart. I am truly amazed! I’d highly recommend his books and classes. Both were one of the best gifts I could give myself.

This is required reading for an online course on Classical Mythology offered by Oxford. Good, synthesizing work offers an overview of the origins and evolution of Greek myths not just within the classical world but also as it has survived down to our times. If you are a novice you can buy Graves's authoritative version as a companion text.

I think that this book, although very well written, should have a more divulgative cut and should indulge a bit less in digressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very accessible, very thorough, very scholarly look at Greek Mythology
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2012
I would recommend this book for anyone who has a working knowledge of Greek Mythology and wants to know more. Also, if you ever wondered why Freud thought we had an 'Oedipus complex', it's explained very well in this book. There's also a look at the creation myths of ancient Greece and other countries which may shed some light on where the Greek myths came from. There is an examination of the historicity of mythology, the psychology of mythology, the various interlinked tales that make up the intermeshed complexity of Greek Mythology, including the Odyssey and Iliad. Highly recommended to anyone who knows a little, nothing at all, or a lot - there's something here for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 2012
This book is a very good introduction to Greek Mythology. So much so, in fact, that the Oxford University Department for Continuing Educations (basically the distance learning brach of Oxford university) have this book on the reading list for their Greek Mythology course, so I'm not the only one that recommends this book. It's easy to read, nicely written, and will make you want to learn more.

Other books recommended on the aforementioned course:
Cassell's Dictionary Of Classical Mythology (Four Courts History Classics)
or
The Penguin Dictionary of Classical Mythology (Penguin Dictionary)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Greek Mythology
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2015
This book is an excellent overview of this fascinating subject, the author has presented an excellent overview of the subject making the subject very readable and digestible. It certainly has made a impact to me as Ive been constantly referring to this manual for both references and quick explanations. The subjects also cover modern interpretation of myths which I found remarkable.
An excellent book not just for the beginner but provides quick look-ups for the advanced.
