Chris Ferrie is an award-winning physicist and Senior Lecturer for Quantum Software and Information at the University of Technology Sydney. He has a Masters in applied mathematics, BMath in mathematical physics and a PhD in applied mathematics. He lives in Australia with his wife and children.

Neal D. Goldstein, PhD, MBI is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health. With a background in biomedical informatics, he focuses on computational approaches in complex data settings, especially electronic health records and disease surveillance, to understand infectious disease transmission. This has been demonstrated through his work with blood borne pathogens (HIV and hepatitis C), COVID-19, vaccine preventable diseases, and healthcare associated infections. Great for toddlers and necessary for certain adults!

I bought this because we have already been enjoying Pandemics for Babies. Both have been hugely helpful with our toddler to learn about science and the confusing world she's now in. It's been useful to illustrate and explain concepts to help us to encourage safe behaviors and ward off imagined fears without the same fights many adults have with each other about whether to believe science... So I would also recommend this book for any adults in your life who are still having trouble doing what my toddler has become quite successful at doing only recently to help be safe. One of the limited number of sentences she can now say is "I go inside, wear mask" to express when she does not want to wait in the car when we might be supporting a local business with a take out order.

I received a digital copy from the publisher as part of the Sourcebooks Early Reader Program. This book offers clear, concise, and easy to understand explanations of the history of germs in medicine, what germs are, how germs are spread, sources and lifespan of germs, and how to fight back against germs with specific methods such as hand washing, wearing masks, and avoiding touching your faces. This is my favorite of this book series so far and highly recommend it to everyone. so much information included in such a short book with excellent illustrations to accompany the text.

I received a free copy of this book. And let me tell you how easy it was for my grandson to understand the science of the book. I was pleasantly surprised by his reaction to learning and understanding of what I was reading to him.

Misprint, not as good as the others

Most of these books are more for preschoolers and some for toddlers. My copy is misprinted, didn't find out until too late sadly. Even so Pandemics for Babies is better. I usually like these books but this one is not as good as the rest. I think the author was trying too hard not to overlap Pandemic and probably should have left face mask out all together. This book took more explaining from me then the others did, and I would say all the books one weakness is that it uses more complex words while not providing the phonetic breakdown. For example "Bacteriophage" or "Lactobacillus". In future books I would really like to have that, as it helps me but more importantly I am teaching my boys to read and it would be useful for them. I read these books to my boys as babies but they really didn't start grasping the concepts until at least 3. Before that they just enjoyed the gestures and visual aids I used to try and tell the stories.

It’s never too early to become a scientist, as the review says, but it is sometimes too early to get scared of things you don’t understand. At the risk of sounding glib, this is a topic beyond the grasp (or relevance) of its intended audience, and while it makes a valiant attempt at explaining germ theory — with an emphasis on coronavirus — what outcome do we hope to achieve by arming a two- or three- or four-year-old with this knowledge?

Seems like a hawk grub on a hot topic to me. You might feel differently, so page through and decide if it’s for you and your child before ordering.

This is not age appropriate for babies. We were sent this book in our subscription box for my 22 month old. It’s one thing to teach toddlers about the importance of washing their hands, but to make babies scared of germs being spread by animals does not seem okay. We also should not be normalizing mask wearing for babies. As parents we need to be sure that the books that are being read to our kids is not propaganda.

This is ridiculous. Why would I put a mask on my baby?! I can’t believe anyone thought we wanted this as a gift. It’s been recycled now. Garbage. There is so much more to life. Living in fear of everything is not living. What’s the point of staying alive if you’re not making your life count!
