This book covers Ancient Chinese history from The Shang Dynasty to the Fall of the Han Dynasty. Each chapter is about 4 to 5 pages long with the exception of Chapter 7 which discusses Chinese inventions that we use today, arts & calligraphy; and Chapter 10 which covers customs and festivities, this includes the Chinese Lunar calendar and the Chinese Zodiac.
JAPAN:
This is a fun and easy to read history book for kids. In 52 pages, it covers history from the Jomon to the Heian periods, followed by chapters on famous historical figures, culture and society, myths and legends, and religion and spirituality.
After each chapter there is a “challenge” section which I found helpful for memory retention
PAPERBACK VERSION:
PAPERBACK VERSION: As usual, the paperback version does not disappoint. The materials are of very good quality, the font makes for easy reading, the photos and maps are colorful, the pages are not dull.
CHINA --
This ebook covers a particular range of ancient Chinese history -- from the early Yangshao and Longshan Cultures (before 2100 BCE) to the Second Imperial Dynasty (the Han Dynasty) until about 220 CE).
What makes this book fascinating is the explanation of the significant things the Chinese invented, such as paper, gunpowder, calligraphy, the compass, ice cream, and the umbrella. This hits the important points of Chinese life and culture. Fascinating reading.
Japan --
Japanese history began long ago, but the first measured era was the Jamon Period which lasted from 13,000 BCE to about 300 BCE. These hunters and gatherers (who started to settle in communities and farms) created the first pottery.
This eBook covers the gamut of ancient Japanese history, zeroing in on their dynasties, leaders, art and literature, myths, and religions. About this time, Captivating History started making these books into study units for homeschoolers (along with everyone else who likes to read history). Quizzes after each section test the reader's comprehension of the material.
I learned so many things from Japan and China that I was not familiar with, as I have not done a lot of study on these two civilizations. I did truly enjoy each read, and think this is the perfect way to introduce youths to ancient civilizations.
Get lost in a great book, have a bit of artistic fun with some of the activities, and check your knowledge as you go! Great for schools, libraries, and the voracious reader who wants to keep learning!
Culture always tells you what the people are most concerned about so as you study the arts, structures, infrastructure and artifacts of any period you learn a great deal about the society. China and Japan are rich in ancient art and artifacts available to study because they left many of these things in the tombs of the wealthy and powerful. Gold jewelry, art and ceramic statues were entombed with them because they believed that they would be needed in the after life. This was part of their ancestor worship.
Part 1 (Ancient China) It begins with the nomadic tribes entering and settling the Yellow River Valley and it describes the hardships they had to face and how they handled the situations. It tells how the first dynasty came about and why. Then it describes the progression of the dynasties from one to another down through the centuries. It describes the rise of Taoist, Confuciunist and Buddhist religions and their affects on the Chinese people. It tells of the Chinese family values and the worship of their ancestors. The Chinese have a mixture of many different beliefs which have been mythicized and passed down for centuries.
Part 2 (Ancient Japan) Ancient Japanese history consists of six periods described in the first six chapters. All of the emperors are said to be descended from the first emperor who unified Japan in the second period. Each period is known for some change which took place such as moving to a new capital city. Change took place in religion gradually from the beginning in Shinto as it evolved from a nature religion to a religion with multiple deities and a story of creation. Buddhism became the official state religion but Shinto remained as well. Half of this part deals with Historical figures, Myths and Legends, Culture and Society and Religion and Spirituality. It presents different facets of what has influenced the Japanese culture of the present. Some of the Shinto gods and the legends are described. The influence of Shinto and Buddhist philosophy are described.
