In this classic scripture of Tibetan Buddhism—traditionally read aloud to the dying to help them attain liberation—death and rebirth are seen as a process that provides an opportunity to recognize the true nature of mind. This translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead emphasizes the practical advice that the book offers to the living. The insightful commentary by Chögyam Trungpa, written in clear, concise language, explains what the text teaches us about human psychology. This book will be of interest to people concerned with death and dying, as well as those who seek greater spiritual understanding in everyday life.

I love it! I am a MYTHOLOGY FREAK and have been studying world RELIGIONS MYTHOLOGY since I was in KINDERGARTEN!!! The names of the deities are pretty much the SAME in the OTHER version of TBOtD I have... but many of the SECONDARY deities and their CONSORTS have TOTALLY different names... and I wanted to know how to SPELL the words he is using! Glad I looked INTO it and didn't just say "OH WELL... that's the way it GOES!" Thanks Amazon!!!!

Scholarly excellence combined with highly pragmatic application - THIS is the book to get, keep and use. In fact, get two, and have one spiral-bound so you can flip back and forth a thousand times, because you will want to!

Instead of repeating what most people stated, I just wanted to emphasize on the size. This book is soooo tiny, it can fit in your pocket! It literally fits in the palm of your hand, and perfect to throw in the purse, the murse or your desk at work.

Also, for those non-buddhist coworkers, you won't get that "look" when they see (can't) the title of the book.

I've read better translations, however it is what it is! TINY and loaded with info!

I've worn out several copies of the Tibetan Book of the Dead - and many have 'disappeared' from my shelf. *smile*
When I was attending shamanic training, this book was used as a 'textbook' for a two-year course on "conscious deathing".

I love Chogyam Trungpa's commentary. When I lived in Boulder (early 1970's), he lived next door while creating Naropa Institute, and I often attended his lectures. It's good to 'see' him again.

The great BARDO Thotrol (Thodol), or The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Bardo, is the only well known teratoma of Tibetan Buddhism or Lamaism, a syncretistic religious blend of Asian Buddhism & the native to Tibet Bon. A Teratoma is a manuscript or scroll hidden or buried & intended to be discovered sometime in the future, where it will have more relevance. This Book of the Dead is not as well represented as The Egyptian one but because of this is more 'user-friendly'. It describes symbolically, what the Lamaistic Tradition believes are the events occurring to the Soul after death & this book is supposed to guide one through the passing on of a friend or relative; & to help one prepare for their own demise. Really a beautiful vision, This edition doesn't have any pictures & this book is not as ritualistic as The Egyptian Book of the Dead, which can be said to be more Magickal; whereas this work is more Mystical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the inevitable

I have had this book 3 times now. Never lend it.
Just give it to the person. While difficult to understand at times, the information and awareness that develops is very helpful. We don't really know what happens when we die. Even if an atheist, this book will help direct your path.
I would guess the readers will be more aware and prepared. I like it anyway. The poem is the best if that is all one can manage. My mother is 92. It is hard to let go. She has lost most of her ability to speak about her memories or even remember them. I am going to get her to read the poem out loud for her...and me. I think the Tibetan Book of the Dead will be very helpful for both of us.

1.0 out of 5 stars ATTENTION : livre microscopique
Reviewed in France on November 22, 2018
