Am I There Yet?: The Loop-de-loop, Zigzagging Journey to Adulthood (@bymariandrew) Hardcover – March 27, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
In the journey toward adulthood, it is easy to find yourself treading the path of those who came before you; the path often appears straight and narrow, with a few bumps in the road and a little scenery to keep you inspired. But what if you don’t want to walk a worn path? What if you want to wander? What if there is no map to guide you through the detours life throws your way?
From creating a home in a new city to understanding the link between a good hair dryer and good self-esteem to dealing with the depths of heartache and loss, these tales of the twentysomething document a road less traveled—a road that sometimes is just the way you’re meant to go.

I’ve followed Andrew on Instagram for about a year, so I thought I would’ve seen all the artwork, but with over 180 pages of drawings, there’s many here I’ve never seen. Plus, they look even better in full-sized prints. There’s also thirteen illustrated essays that run four pages each, covering everything from travel and milestones to finding your style.
The artwork is grouped into chapters covering topics like Overcoming Uncertainty and Creating Home, and there’s lots of insights on all the ups and downs of dating, changing jobs, and moving to a new city. There's great bits of humor, and it's also inspiring in how she gained strength and maturity from even the worst moments of grief and confusion.
The book itself couldn’t be presented better. The cover has a great texture, the endpapers are painted with watercolor brushstrokes, the pages are thick so the artwork doesn’t show through, the colors are vibrant, and the font for the essays has a stylish flair.
As someone who is about to graduate college and embark on a first job/live in a new city, I have found Mari's perspective so delightful and helpful. I've also shared her work with other friends my age and everyone who I've shown the book to has said that they want a copy of their own. This would make an excellent gift for people who are still figuring out things in their 20s or even a long distance best friend.

Today's generation will relate to it.
Great balance of text and illustration. Text provides meaningful context to Mari's wonderful illustrations and inspires deeper reflection on the points or questions she raises. Recommended read for anyone who has struggled at all with questions about their relationships, jobs, purpose etc.
I do wish that the book wasn't quite so heteronormative and amatonormative *but* it does represent the author's own (straight, monogamy-seeking) journey so it totally makes sense; I won't fault her for that. Basically, I loved it so much that I can't help but want to see a similar book that represents other relationship styles, orientations, etc. and their inherent joys and challenges in such a relatable way.
