Ancient Greece: Everyday Life in the Birthplace of Western Civilization Hardcover – October 15, 2013

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Ancient Greece comes alive in this vibrant portrait of the daily lives of ordinary people—men and women, children and the elderly, slaves and foreigners, rich and poor. Robert Garland presents a wealth of fascinating, sometimes surprising information about our spiritual, cultural, and intellectual ancestors during this influential period. Did Greeks share our notion of romantic love? How stable was the family? How did they relax? What did they eat? Why was it more desirable to be a slave than a day laborer? Were they really more cultivated than we are?  Unique and descriptive, the attractive volume include includes images throughout, as well as maps.

What a beautiful book to add to the library of any ancient history buff or classisist! My daughter is studying Latin and Ancient Greek and she is enjoying this interesting read on everyday life in Ancient Greece; it adds a new perspective to her studies and helps to paint a vivid mental picture of the language in use.

The book itself is well bound with a heavy jacket, comfortable to hold with a lovely cover. Very pleased with this purchase!

If you're looking to learn what it might have been like to hang out at the Agora and have lunch, maybe serve on a jury, and then head off to a symposium before bedtime, this is the book for you. An excellent and detailed look at the everyday life of the ancient Greek/Athenian. Very, very interesting and very accessible.

Great history book

There is truly some great info in here, but I don't know how much to trust it due to the contradictions and other questionable statements present in the book. For instance, at one point it mentions a study that showed patients with religious faith were three times as likely to survive heart surgery. This is impossible; the odds of surviving heart surgery are about 98%. (I looked up the study. Patients were three times more likely to die without faith, which is a very different matter.) In any case, I have no faith in this book, which felt carelessly put together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Une introduction horizons multiples à la civilisation grecque.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only every text was as well-written, accessible *and* scholarly

Between five years at veterinary school and ten years writing novels set in ancient Rome, I've read my share of textbooks. Most are serviceable, with a few being 'wall-bangers' and a few outstanding. I'm happy to say that this volume falls firmly into the last category. Perhaps it's unfair to expect that academics of whatever stripe should write well, but it's a sad reality that most have a dry style. Garland is one of those few who can impart the information in great ladles full, yet keep it interesting, lively and even humorous. The 330 odd pages of this book flew by, and I made copious notes from the wealth of material within. Absolutely tip top stuff. This is an excellent volume to consider the world and peoples of ancient Greece.

Ben Kane, author of the Eagles of Rome and Hannibal novels, and from 2018, the Eagle and the Sun, the story of Rome's invasion of Greece.
