Ranging from the first Roman rediscovery of Greek vases in southern Italy to the present day, this volume explores the history of their study. It looks at those aspects that each era thought important, the varied forms scholarly debate took, and the responses which ordered the direction of research. The history of collections is also of importance to this study as the contents of collections can reveal how certain types of figured vases were favoured over others and were disseminated to a wider audience, thereby gaining more prominence and being more closely studied.

A really good read

A really good read
This is a splindid book which covers the whole area of the importation of Greek black and red-figure wear into South Italy. Later, the South Italians themselves began to copy this type of pottery even though they couldn't read Greek themselves. So, many later pottery from South Italy have variation from the originals. He also covers many aspects of history surrounding this period and it makes a gripping, splendid read - it answered many lingering questions I had in my mind on the subject superbly! Well done Dr. Higginson, full marks!!!

I found this book in the American School of Classical Studies Library, and I have to say it was a most pleasant surprise ! It combines meticulous scholarly research with the author's desire to produce a book that is not intended for scholars alone. The result of this effort is a truly well-written study that specialists of Greek pottery will certainly appreciate, but at the same time any non-specialist interested in ancient Greek vases and / or the history of scholarship and collections will thoroughly enjoy. I loved the author's writing style, as well as the fact that he is always careful not to exhaust his reader with endless details. He explains everything, and he explains it well. His skill with words is matched with a good selection of beautiful black and white photos that complement his well-organised text. This book offers a fascinating overview of the history of scholarship and collection of South Italian figured pottery from the Roman Period to the 20th century, and reaches a number of very interesting conclusions. Definitely recommended !
