There was a time before England was united. This was a time before William the Bastard decided to prove to his contemporaries that his bastard moniker would be erased with a swift conquest of the biggest island northwest of Europe. A time before the Battle of Hastings and the year 1066. A time when many petty kingdoms ruled, conquered, and were liberated, time and time again, by a specific people group. A people group that is, in fact, a blend of many and that authors of later dates would collectively call the Anglo-Saxons.

With this book, we want to let our readers know how vibrant and lively (as well as deadly) life in Britain was during the perhaps wrongly-titled “Dark Ages.” With the end of the Roman Empire, the local Britons were left to their devices, and it would be several people groups from a peninsula in Central Europe that would come to dominate the island, making sure their presence was known through a series of kingdoms, battles, clashes, victories, and defeats.

But the Anglo-Saxons have a lot more to offer us history buffs. We can learn about their day-to-day life: how they dressed, what they ate and drank, how they waged war or had fun, how they buried their dead, and how they worshiped their gods. We can also learn about their art, their amazing metal and clay pieces, stunning bits of tapestries, and dozens of well-illuminated manuscripts. And if we lack any information on what they thought of the world around them, we can be happy that they were willing to tell us that themselves, all through hundreds of written texts of both religious and secular nature.

The Anglo-Saxons were, indeed, an odd group of people to take control of Britain. But they didn’t do it all at once, and just like any other people in history, they had a period of adjustment, growth, reconstruction, and eventual rise to prominence.

I have always wonder why the British always call themselves the United Kingdom. Until I read this history of it, I never really understand the fact that there was a number of different kingdoms and eventually they are united to form the United Kongdom. There seems to be a bit of question in my mind as I read somewhere that constantine was at one point in time ruled the British island before he eventually return to Europe and win the battales to ascent to the throne of Caesar. But then I do not have any concrete evidence that that piece of informtion is correct. It is also interesting in review of this book in terms of the legacy. Just like any nation, the road to their unification has pass a large number of battales. Kings kill and be killed. However little is commented on the commoner that eventually suffer the most. It is really on the bare back of the commoner and slaves that the so call greatness of these kings and nobles are achieved.

Whenever I would see or hear something about the Anglo-Saxons, I would get and done and go "Great! But who were they?" Now I know, or at least, have some idea. I like the everyday language the book uses. It's relatable and not boring or stuffy. I don't need a million footnotes. I am not going to be debating details. This book is not for serious academics, but its good for my simply curious mind.

I am doing research on the history of England and was hoping for a serious development of the Anglo Saxon period from 410 to 1066. I was disappointed. The book is only 118 pages in length with large type. The book seems targeted to a junior high student with large type and basic language. There are only 14 illustrations, some of which are so dim that they have little value. I learned some things, but I could not find either the name of the author or the name of the publisher! Very strange. It makes me wonder about the credibility of the text. Almost half of the book is devoted to the various Anglo Saxon kingdoms, with a litany of battles fought, won and lost which was repetitive and boring. Sorry I cannot be more positive.

I love the period of the Anglo-Saxons (after the departure of the Romans and before the Norman Conquest). It's an age when Britain was ruled by a dizzying number of rulers. The subsequent struggle for power among them makes this period difficult to get a handle on. You need a score-card to determine who's on top at any given time.
