If you want to discover the captivating history of the Hundred Years' War, then keep reading...

Two captivating manuscripts in one book:
  • The Hundred Years’ War: A Captivating Guide to the Conflicts Between the English House of Plantagenet and the French House of Valois That Took Place During the Middle Ages
  • Joan of Arc: A Captivating Guide to a Heroine of France and Her Role During the Lancastrian Phase of the Hundred Years’ War

Knights and battles, princesses and castles, sieges and warrior prophets who lead the way to victory upon shining white horses: all of these feel like the stuff of myths and legends. Yet the story of the Hundred Years' War contains all of these things, and it is a story that is entirely true.

The story of this war is made fascinating by its setting, but it is made inspiring by its characters. Here is a blind king who rides to war for the opportunity to strike one last blow with his sword; here is a young prince, dressed all in black, who leads his father's men to victory; here are boy kings and fierce queens, prisoners who believe in honor, hailstorms that stop entire campaigns, and the wonderful story of a young peasant girl who changed the course of history forever.

The Hundred Years' War changed language, national identity, weaponry, and even the way that people think about war. It is part of the greater narrative of human history and gives a snapshot of how human nature can behave when pressed by the extremity of such a conflict—sometimes with unspeakable honor and courage and other times with cowardice, selfishness, and arrogance. There are many lessons to be learned from this war. Its tale is a cautionary one, but it is also a tale of adventure, battle, hope, and divine intervention. It's the tale of a war unlike any other.

This is the kind of history book I love. Super detailed, tons of character and setting to bring it to life, and true to the facts. I felt like I learned more reading this book than I did in a lot of the history classes that I paid good money for over the years. Honestly, this book rocks. And I believe I got it for free on Reddit, so that makes it sooooo much better.

Highly recommended. I cannot say enough how excellent it was.

This is an enlightening look at a truly troubled/extended period of European history.
Crazy times - thousands of people suffered and died purely because lords and royalty wanted to expand the land (and taxes) they controlled - at the ultimate expense of the average inhabitants.
The format seems to call for rather a lot of 'poetic licence' in describing situations, weather and conversations, etc from hundreds of years ago - BUT: It does make reading more enjoyable :-)
The second segment of the book concentrates of the life and times of Joan of Arc - however: there is rather a lot of repetition of the background, battles, circumstances, etc from the first section.

I like this series of books on Kindle for their brevity. I don't want to get into a thousand pages to get an overview of a topic I may have moderate interest in. There are just too many things to read. So I like the quick, down and dirty sequence of events approach for the purpose of gaining an review or overview of a particular period. If I'm not moved to greater reading on the subject, then fine I got the high points. On the other hand the brevity does not allow for much expansion on events leading up to or contributing the featured event. So the jumps in time can be abrupt and confusing at times. In a war that lasts 120 years there will be a lot of players, many sharing the names Edward, George or Phillip with a number after them. You hardly have a chance to get to know any one monarch before they're replaced by a successor. Some books in the series are better than others, this was one of the lesser ones though it did spur me on to read a companion book "The History of the Middle Ages." For history buffs these books are too thin in content but for those who want to have a chance of answering some of the questions on Jeopardy they'll do.

Two book bundle makes it convenient to switch back & forth to look up information. Hundreds years War was actually a series of wars fought between traditional enemies France & Great Britain with France in the end being the ultimate winner !
Joan of Arc had to be one of the most mysterious figures in history it’s as if she appeared out of nowhere to lead France to victory after victory. But, through circumstances she lost her life
Good information contained within these pages. So, great job by the Captivating History staff!

As with all of the Captivating History books, this tries to make reasonable sense and order out of human disorder. It succeeds, in the most part. The Hundred Years War was a tangle of people and countries hating each other with the zeal of an 80's soap opera! Thanks to this book, I understand it much more.

Another informative read from CH. Although it's called The 100 Years War, the fact remains, the British and French hated each other through WWII. It seems to me they have jealously protected their right to be each other's main enemy.
